A Rich History in Philadelphia
Our story began on June of 1865, in the immediate aftermath of the Civil War. Church women across Philadelphia, famous for nursing sick & wounded soldiers in field hospitals, chose to channel their extraordinary caregiving energy into a permanent mission: creating a home for older adults.
Originally founded as the Methodist Episcopal Home for the Aged, this pioneering organization was built to offer senior living in a dignified, respectful setting. In 1899, the community moved to Belmont Avenue, constructing our majestic English Gothic building designed by the famous architectural firm Hales & Ballinger.
Built of beautiful granite sourced from Port Deposit, Maryland, our historic building is recognized by the Philadelphia Museum of Art & the American Institute of Architects (AIA) as a notable example of Philadelphia architecture.
Today, we proudly carry this historic legacy forward. We preserve the original architectural grandeur—including our terrazzo-floored grand lobby & magnificent leaded glass dining room ceiling—while providing modern residential updates to suit your active lifestyle.
